String Quintet No. 1: Scene Shifting
Original composition by Melanie Joy Alvey

      1st movement: Call to Respond
During an artist’s journey of creating a new work of art, she must respond to the call of creation. Despite fears or feelings of inadequacy, the artist knows she will not feel complete without her artwork being available to the world. A dialogue between herself and God allows her to put aside her insecurities so her creativity can flourish.
2nd Movement: Call to Rest
The artist feels a calling to rest in the middle of our creation process. This is our moment to sit and listen to our influences and allow God to speak new ideas into our hearts.

3rd Movement: Call to Resolve
An artist’s final step in the creation process is to simply move forward with full momentum. The initial ideas have been set, the influences have been established, and now the artist must finish, even if it means collapsing in a heap at the end.

Written by Daniel Krenz with the Music City Review from Nashville Composer Collective's 9/20/20 Concert:
"First up was Melanie Alvey with her piece Mountain Echoes orchestrated for three violins (one electrically amplified and hooked up to a looping station), viola, cello, and electric bass. Opening with a solo violin creating a multi layered loop of an asymmetric groove, gradually the rest of the ensemble comes in building on the established beat. This piece was pleasing both aurally and visually seeing the opposing violins echoing gracefully back and forth to each other over the ostinato. Mountain Echoes was a personal favorite of mine on the concert and it is always a treat to see the composer performing their own work."
